Near-net shapes provide a cost and productivity advantage by allowing for the purchase of material that is much closer to the final profile of a part than buying material in its original rectangular form.
For Boeing suppliers, this means removing the need to pay for excess material just for it to be cut away later. This process creates a better buy-to-fly ratio, ensuring that the actual finished part being created makes up a greater percentage of the purchased material's value.
For Boeing, they are able to buy less material from mills to produce more parts. This lowers the amount of material purchased per airplane built, also known as the buy-to-fly ratio.
Different shapes can be nested and cut from the same piece of material to ensure that waste is minimized, further reducing scrap costs and increasing value and sustainability in the operations of both Boeing and their suppliers.
